Tidelift co-founder Luis Villa to discuss “responsibility in depth” at AI.dev and Cassandra Summit

This Wednesday, December 13 from 11:10 a.m. - 11:40 a.m. PST, Tidelift co-founder and General Counsel, Luis Villa will walk attendees through what we’ve learned about the shortcomings of open licensing methods in machine learning (ML) and how we can learn from the “defense in depth” approach used to enhance cybersecurity to inform a multilayered strategy towards a more responsible usage and understanding of ML.

These layers are deeply informed by Luis’s long work in open source communities and policy, and will include:

• the creators of the data sets that are the “source” for open AI, paralleling Tidelift’s work with open source maintainers;
• the intellectual property rights and licenses that underpin open, and might influence AI;
• the labor force that assembles data to create models;
  the industry that will be built on top of these models and SaaS-provided APIs; and
• the governments that will inevitably regulate AI (as they are doing with traditional software)

With this multifaceted approach, we can provide a workable framework of technical innovation, ease of use, and equitable social outcomes.
