A few weeks ago, Tidelift co-founder and resident lawyer Luis Villa joined Nick Nisi and Chris Hiller at JS Party to share lawyerly (and programmery) thoughts about GitHub Copilot. Nick and Chris chatted with him about the implications of an AI pair programmer from a legal perspective.

“I’m a copyright nerd at heart,” Luis said, “and that’s why I’m here today.”

The basic purpose of GitHub Copilot is to use AI to help fill in boilerplate code. From a programming side of things, Luis said he was both impressed and not so impressed—it’ll generate code, but the code isn’t necessarily the best code. But it’s learning.

“There’s really fascinating questions about where it goes from here,” Luis said. “The ways you can leverage it is really interesting.”
